Serena Williams has announced her second pregnancy, revealing it to journalists at the star-studded Met Gala in New York. Stating in a comment that she was accompanied by “three of us” on the red carpet, alongside her husband Alexis Ohanian, this left fans in awe.
The 23-time major champion had previously declared her intention to step away from tennis, explaining in a Vogue article last year that she wished to expand her family after giving birth to daughter Olympia in 2017.
On Monday evening, Serena Williams expressed her excitement on Instagram at being invited to the Met Gala by her long-time friend Anna Wintour, the co-chair and Vogue editor-in-chief. Williams is a regular attendee of the annual event, which supports the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, and wore a black gown with a white skirt to this year’s event, which was themed “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” in tribute to the late Chanel designer.
On the red carpet, footage captured Williams’ husband, entrepreneur and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, tenderly placing his hand on the 41-year-old tennis star’s midsection.
The announcement by Williams suggested that she was unlikely to return to competitive tennis, despite being one of the most successful athletes in the sport’s history.
Several other high-profile tennis players, including Roger Federer in a black tuxedo and dark tortoiseshell sunglasses and former US Open champion Andy Roddick in a black dinner suit with formal slippers, were also in attendance at the event.
The event was also attended by American basketball player Brittney Griner, who had recently returned to the US after spending almost 10 months in a Russian penal colony, as well as Eileen Gu, a two-time Olympic champion freestyle skier from China.
